New Faculty

UCI Sociology Department welcomes its newest member, Yen-Sheng Chiang,
as an Assistant Professor. Chiang received his Ph.D. from the University
of Washington in 2008, and spent a year as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the
Max Planck Institute in Berlin, Germany, before beginning his career in
Irvine this fall. Chiang’s research focuses on the foundation of social
order and human behaviors, examining topics such as the emergence and
maintenance of fairness. Chiang's work utilizes mathematical,
statistical, and experimental methods, and brings together knowledge
from cognitive psychology, evolutionary anthropology, computer science,
and sociology. Chiang publications have appeared in /Rationality and
Society/ and in the /Journal of Mathematical Sociology/. Two of his
papers won section awards as the Best Graduate Student Paper from the
American Sociological Association. Chiang's arrival further expands the
growth of UCI Sociology, in particular in the Department's expertise in
social networks, mathematical sociology, and economic sociology.
